Classics by Night: ‘Pina’ in Paradijskerk
A breathtaking film by Wim Wenders in which dancers take you on a journey of discovery through the impressive land- and city-scapes of the Ruhr region. The film Pina enters the fascinating world of choreographer Pina Bausch, who founded the renowned interdisciplinary dance ensemble Tanztheater Wuppertal. What was initially intended as a documentary about her life, became – after her sudden passing – a modern dance film where the Tanztheater take their local Wuppertal surroundings as their stage.
The result: a visually stunning and emotive journey, through the coming together of dance and theater. The streets, squares, and landscapes of Wuppertal, the city home to Pina and her art for more than 35 years, are brought to life through her work. Amidst the Wuppertal Suspension Railway, industrial heritage of Zollverein, and the SANAA cube, Pina’s dance art leaps off the screen. An adventurous tribute to the choreographer, the landscape and the power of dance.
This remarkable film deserves a remarkable venue. Pina will be screened in the Paradijskerk on the Nieuwe Binnenweg. The film will be shown with English subtitles.
