Phantom City Revisited

About 15 years ago, photographer Kim Bouvy started a fascinating photo book about Rotterdam: Phantom City. The city is both the main character and the setting in a partly real, partly fictional narrative about the past and possible future of this city. With the black-and-white images of desolate places in the city center, she provides a poetic commentary on the city’s fascination with its image. The walk takes you past the places from her book, which have now changed beyond recognition due to the many new buildings such as the Market Hall and the residential towers in the Maritime District. But what do all those fancy buildings look like, early in the morning, in a deserted city. Wander through the Phantom City of then and now with Kim Bouvy.

Rem Koolhaas did not only designed De Rotterdam building, but also the minimalist suites in the nHow hotel. The outspoken design hotel – Room Mate Bruno is located in the Pakhuis Meesteren, just opposite to nHow hotel. Architect and designer Teresa Sapey used a cheerful and outspoken color palette here. From the many roof terraces of the hotel you can enjoy the beautiful view over the Wilhelminapier and see the new developments around the Rijnhaven.

Rijnhaven Walk

Rijnhaven summarises  the development of Rotterdam: from port city to city on the river. The industrial heritage on Katendrecht is still fully present with the Santos warehouse, Codrico and the Fenixloodsen. A new skyline has arisen on the Wilhelminapier in thirty years. There is still a lot of construction going on around the Rijnhaven and new plans are in the pipeline. The Floating Office has been built on the water and there will be a floating city park. The guide will meet you at the boardroom next to the New Luxor theatre, the information center for the Rijnhaven.
