There was a neglected office building on the Westzeedijk 399. When architecture office Powerhouse Company moved into the premises as an anti-squat tenant, founder Nanne de Ru saw the potential. He took the initiative to transform the building to a living and working unit with 20 apartments and an office floor: West399. The building is now occupied by a mix of young starters, families and couples. The original building was designed in 1965 by the Rotterdam architect J.W.C. Boks, who also designed the Bouwcentrum at the Kruisplein. In the 1980s the appearance of the building changed drastically through a large-scale renovation in which characteristic features and details of the building were changed and removed. For the transformation, Powerhouse Company started to look for the original details and materials. The additions from the 80s and 90s were removed. For example, the sun blinds have been taken away and the strip windows were renovated and equipped with new insulation glass. Balconies have been added, equipped with carefully detailed steel railing that is similar with the detailing of the window hinge. Furthermore, the fa├žade has been cleaned with extra care to preserve the existing patina of the different materials.
