Recap 2025… Afternoon: Unique Living

22 June 2025

In Rotterdam, former industrial areas are increasingly being transformed into new residential neighbourhoods — the Lloydkwartier being one such example. In the afternoon, architects from Architectuur Maken, Paul de Ruiter Architects, mei architects and 123DV Architects guided us through the area. From brand-new projects such as Lloyd Yard, SAWA and Lloyd Yard Docks to the renovated warehouses Jobsveem and De Herder. In the Maasvenster of Lloyd Yard, Oriol Marès and Lluïsa Paredes of Grounds provided musical interludes for the audience throughout the afternoon.

Alongside the home visits in the Lloydkwartier, a special residence in Feijenoord also opened its doors: the Staircase House of graphic designer Simone Trum and artist Koen Taselaar. Behind the façade of this CPO terraced house lies an unexpectedly vibrant world.

The architect of the home, Tomas Dirrix, gave us a unique glimpse into the design and construction process. What happens when you ask an architect to design a staircase? Dirrix hollowed out the house and inserted an entirely new staircase structure as a centrepiece in the middle of the remaining concrete shell — resulting in this unique house-within-a-house.
